A Scripture and a Prayer: “The Soul’s Anchor”

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.” (Hebrews 6:19-20a)

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross to be an anchor for our souls. An anchor You offered in heaven through Your blood as You entered the Most Holy Place, obtaining our eternal redemption. Help us, therefore, not to lose this anchor and find ourselves drifting spiritually beyond Your appointed destination. Therefore, may we give more earnest heed to this precious promise You have given. And so, once again, we say thank you. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Our Guide Into Eternity”

“For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death.” (Psalm 48:14)

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for Your everlasting presence and for guiding us through this life until we are with You in Heaven. Thank You for guiding us through every circumstance and every trial we face in this life of faith we’ve chosen to walk with You. We do this believing that You, through Your word, will be a lamp to our feet and a light for the path You have chosen. Thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit of truth to guide us into all truth. Therefore, help us trust in You with all our heart, not to lean on our own understanding, and to acknowledge and cultivate our personal, intimate relationship with You, so that You will make our paths straight. Then we will not fear as we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Better Than Expected”

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” (Ephesians 3:20)

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for Your exceedingly abundant promises, so graciously given to us, promises of abundant life not only here on earth but also in heaven once this life is over. Thank you for Your exceedingly great grace and mercy, which give us Your righteousness and our salvation. And thank you for the greatest gift of them all, the gift of the Holy Spirit, who leads and guides us through this life by Your word, which He inspired to be written down and which transforms us into the image of Jesus. Truly, these are promises beyond us, greater than anything we could on our own think of, ask for, or imagine. Therefore, we give you all thanks and glory in Jesus’s name. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Our Real Enemy”

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the victory we have in You. But help us understand that in this battle we do not fight against people who may oppose us or who believe differently. Our battle is spiritual, not physical. We war against spiritual forces of wickedness, including Satan and his demonic forces. As we do, we need to remember that You have already won the war when You died for our sins and rose from the dead. Let us also understand that You are greater within us than anything Satan can throw at us, and that we are more than conquerors through Your love for us. Therefore, help us fight this battle with the armor You have given and through the Holy Spirit. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “No Comparison”

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)

Prayer:

Lord, I know nothing happens that doesn’t pass through Your hands. I also know You hold all things in Your hands, including us. Yet right now, many of us are suffering, surrounded by hardships, trials of various kinds, and difficulties that never seem to end. When we compare these things to the magnificence of Your grace and mercy, You comfort our hearts with Your presence. Lord, please correct our perspective so we realize You have it all under control and are working Your plan for the glory of Your Kingdom. May we then be shining examples so others can see Your grace working in and through us as we trust in You above all things. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Being Filled”

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

Prayer:

Lord, You have called us not to be filled with artificial stimulants to get through the worries and anxieties that come in life. Rather, You have commanded us to be filled with the Holy Spirit, who will lead and guide us not only away from the false gods and hopes we cling to but also into Your truth for our lives. And so, when anxieties come our way, we will pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance so that Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, will be ours. Holy Spirit, we place ourselves in Your capable hands today. Please give us the knowledge and strength we need. And we ask this in Jesus’s name. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “The Water of Life”

“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)

Prayer:

Lord, how often do we settle for what does not satisfy? How often do we take shortcuts and miss out on Your promise of the well of living water and true spiritual fulfillment? Only You can fulfill what our souls long for and fill the emptiness that aches within our hearts. Help us, O Lord, come to You and fill ourselves with Your water of eternal life. May our souls thirst for You alone, and may we drink deeply from Your river of living water, the Holy Spirit. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “God’s Grace in Affliction”

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” (2 Corinthians 4:17)

Prayer:

Lord, You say that all things work together, both the good and the bad, for our good, and now You are saying that the afflictions we suffer are not as serious as we think. This is because You are working them out within us into something more lasting that will end in glory as we enter into Your eternity in heaven once this life filled with afflictions is finished. But this isn’t just for our eternal life in heaven; it is also what You supply us with now, Your grace and mercy in our afflictions and in our time of need. Your promise is that we can boldly come before Your throne of grace to receive both Your mercy and grace in our time of need. Help us, therefore, Lord, to remember this precious promise and always remember that the veil has been rent and that we now have direct access to You in and by Your grace. And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “What Profit?”

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

Prayer:

Lord, how easy it is to look at the world and all its enticements and desire what is often called “the good life.” But the truth is that it isn’t all that good; in fact, it is a trap set by the enemy of our faith, Satan. Therefore, Lord, forgive us when we focus on our desires, on the things we have prioritized over You, and help us to set our eyes, and the eyes of our heart and mind, upon You and the goals You have set for Your people. This begins with the Great Commandment, that is, to love You above all else and to love others. And it also begins with being Kingdom-oriented and carrying out the Great Commission, to share Your good news and to make disciples. What a glorious goal and job You have set before us, and therefore we thank You. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Not Shaken”

“I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore, my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.” (Psalm 16:8-9)

Prayer:

Lord, looking at the title I’ve chosen for today’s Scripture and a Prayer, I remember James Bond, who would say about his Martini, “shaken but not stirred.” And while this is a classic line in a movie, it is far from what we want as Christians. No, we don’t want our faith to be shaken; rather, we need it stirred up to follow God and His ways. Therefore, Lord, help us to know that Your presence is always with us, and stir up our faith, and fan into flame what You have placed inside our heart, soul, and spirit. And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

Scripture and a Prayer: “Being Renewed”

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16)

Prayer:

Lord, the older we get, the more these bodies go downhill. What was once tight and firm is now a little less tight and a lot less firm. But this is the way of all human life. Yet, in the Spirit, it is exactly the opposite. Proverbs 20:29 says, “The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is their gray head.” As we grow older, help me to grow wiser and to be an encouragement to the generations coming behind us. And in the process, may we grow ever closer to You until that day when we are in Your presence. Thank you for Your renewing love that comes our way every day. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “God Our Refuge and Help”

“Preserve me, O God, for in You I take refuge … do not be far off! O You my help, come quickly to my aid!” (Psalm 16:1; 22:19)

Prayer:

Lord, with all that is going on in our lives, and in this world, which plays a big part of what is going on around us, we humbly ask for You to be our refuge in these times of trouble, our strength in times of weakness, and our help when wounded and in need of aid. Therefore, we call upon the promise of Your word at this time. “You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, and a shade from the heat … (And) Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation.” (Isaiah 25:4, 9) Therefore, we give You thanks and all glory, for Your word is true, and Your promises are sure. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Freedom or Slavery”

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, as we get ready to celebrate this July 4th, we cannot thank you enough for setting us free from the bondage to sin and death, as well as the bondage of this present world. Thank you for the presence of the Holy Spirit within our lives, enabling us to live effectively for Your kingdom, and turning us away from all that is from the god of this world, Satan. I give us wholly over to You, Lord, and may all that we do in the freedom You have provided glorify You. And thank you for Your wonderful grace that sets us free. AMEN

Scripture and a Prayer: “True Freedom”

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I want to thank You for the wonderful gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who took our place and died the death we deserved, setting us free from the Law of sin and death. And thank You, Jesus, for coming to this earth and setting us free from the slavery of sin when You died on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day. Therefore, may we live in the freedom You have provided. And this I ask in Jesus’s mighty and glorious name. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “A Heart’s Cry for Help”

“Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart have multiplied; free me from my anguish. Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins.” (Psalm 25:16-18)

Prayer:

Lord, no matter how many people we know or are around, without You in our lives, we are truly alone. That’s because only You know us, as You were the one who formed and knit us together in our mother’s womb. In fact, You created us for this relationship, as we were made in Your image and likeness. Further, when we came to know Jesus as our Savior, You placed Your Temple within us, where the Holy Spirit now dwells. Therefore, forgive our sins and cleanse our iniquities, so that we can truly be that vessel of honor for You. And finally, thank you for never abandoning us, always being there, and for hearing our heart’s cry. AMEN

Scripture and a Prayer: “Hide and Seek”

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7)

Prayer:

Lord, I remember so vividly my childhood, when we used to play “Hide and Seek.” We would find the best hiding place where nobody could find us. Unfortunately, this is a game we often play with You, where You call us to do or not to do something, and we try to hide, not physically, but mentally and spiritually. Sometimes it’s through escapism into social media and entertainment, but it can also be through ministry, where we hide ourselves, thinking we’re doing something for You. But the truth is that there is nowhere to hide, and it’s better to come out into the light of Your truth and love and follow You rather than trying to hide. Therefore, thank You, Lord, for loving us and for Your presence continuing to pursue us. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Hardened Heart?”

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion” (Hebrews 3:15)

Prayer:

Lord, give us a heart softened by Your grace through faith, so that we don’t follow Israel’s example of hardening our hearts toward You in rebellion because You didn’t do things their way. It says that You brought them into the wilderness for 40 years and did not allow them to enter Your rest, that is, Your land of promise, because of their unbelief. Help us, therefore, Lord, not to be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, but rather to believe Your word of promise. Help us walk by faith in Your word, not by what we see or the circumstances we face. And as we hear Your voice, let us believe and faithfully follow. And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Let’s Start Closing In”

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, may we come to You with humble hearts, submitted to Your will, and with a desire to glorify You as Lord over our lives. Help us come into Your presence with clean hands and a pure heart. Help us keep our ears open and our eyes ever focused on You as we begin to deepen this truly wonderful relationship we have with You. And when we do, may we experience a real and sustained closeness to You, along with the blessings that come when we are in such a relationship. And this we ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

A Scripture and a Prayer: “Trust and Delight in God”

“Trust in the Lord, and do good, dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:3-4)

Prayer:

Lord, from this wonderful promise, You have made it clear that our need is not only to trust You but also to allow that trust to guide our actions. Help us, therefore, to remain in the milk and meat of Your word, so that we can truly feed and feast on Your faithfulness toward us. May we also delight in You and look forward to the gift You have promised, namely the desires of our hearts, which has been and should always be a close, personal relationship with You. And so, may we always be mindful of Your constant presence in our lives, and may we do good and delight ourselves in Your wonderful presence. And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

Scripture and a Prayer: “More Fire Less Fear”

“He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Luke 3:16b)

Prayer:

Lord, as fire burns away all impurities, I humbly ask that You apply Your cleansing fire to our lives, because the greater Your fire within us, the more fear in our lives will be consumed. I also pray the same for Your church. Send down the fire of Your Holy Spirit and envelop Your church in the power of the Holy Spirit, so that Your church can move forward in confidence, knowing that the gates of hell will never prevail. And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN
