Today’s Devotional: “What Goes Around Comes Around”

The old saying goes, “What goes around comes around.” In other words, actions have consequences.

This was God’s message when He allowed the Medo-Persian army to pillage and plunder Babylon and the Chaldeans.

As the Babylonians had done to Judea, Jerusalem, and the Jews, God was now exacting the same punishment on them through the Medo-Persians.

“Shout against her all around; she has given her hand, her foundations have fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of the Lord. Take vengeance on her. As she has done, so do to her.” (Jeremiah 50:15).

And so, the old saying holds, “What goes around comes around,” a phrase derived from the biblical admonition, “They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7).

This account should make us sit up and take notice, especially because the Apostle Paul says not to imitate evil but to imitate what is good (3 John 1:11).

When we imitate evil, we can expect evil in return. But when we do what is right and good, we can expect to receive this in return from the Lord.

And while our actions will have consequences here on earth, what we fail to appreciate is that they will also have eternal consequences.

 Notice the words Jesus will use when we enter judgment.

“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

This may well have been at the heart of the Golden Rule as presented in the Bible.

“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)

Every day, let’s take time to ask the Lord to help us see the good we can do for others, and then ask the Lord to give us the courage to do it.
