Today’s Devotional: “Speak What You Eat”

There’s an old saying, “You are what you eat.” But we also speak what we spiritually consume.

Jesus said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)

We only speak what we eat. If we eat from the world and its philosophies, we’ll only speak what Satan, the ruler of this world, says. But when we partake of God’s word, we’ll speak life to those in darkness.

This is what the Lord told Ezekiel.

“But you, son of man, hear what I say to you … open your mouth and eat what I give you … Son of man, eat what you find; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” (Ezekiel 2:8; 3:1)

God sent Ezekiel to the Jews in exile, and he was to speak God’s word to them. But the words he was to speak were not his own, but rather the Lord’s; and to ensure this, God told him to eat the scroll, which represents God’s word, because it was sweet as honey (Ezekiel 3:3).

This is the same way the Psalmist described God’s word.

“How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103)

To ensure Ezekiel would speak only God’s word and not his own, God made him unable to speak until he had a word from Him. Only then did God open his mouth to speak.

“I will make your tongue cling to the roof of your mouth, so that you shall be mute and not be one to rebuke them … But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth.” (Ezekiel 3:26-27a)

And so, when you eat of God’s word, you’ll speak for God, not for man or yourself.
