Today’s Devotional: “Quality Quiet Time”

How is our quiet time with the Lord?

To spend quality time with God, we need to be “every day” in His word, prayer, and praise. When this happens, the Lord ministers to our hearts, and we’ll be able to minister to others’ lives.

To the women at the well, Jesus spoke something practical.

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” (John 4:23)

“In Spirit and Truth” – what does it mean, and what does it look like?

I liken worshiping God in Spirit to praying in the Spirit, which is one of the weapons in our warfare. Praying in the Spirit isn’t necessarily about tongues, but for me it means allowing the Holy Spirit to direct our prayers.

This is the same for me as worshiping in the Spirit. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to lead our worship of the Lord.

And that would also extend to worshipping the Lord in truth, that is, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our time in His word. The Bible often says that God’s word is truth. Jesus said, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

And so, to worship the Father in truth is to be in His word daily.

But when Jesus said that our worship of the Father is in spirit and truth, He was also saying that our worship of God isn’t tied to a place or to things; rather, genuine worship of God is spiritual.

The woman looked at the place, at creation rather than the creator. She said, “Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” (John 4:20)

Therefore, our worship of the Lord is from the heart, not from ritualistic practice.
