Our Happiness or His Holiness

Thought for Today: “Our Happiness or His Holiness”

God’s plan may not always involve our happiness, but it always involves His holiness.

First, happiness isn’t all that it is cracked up to be. The word comes from the word “hap,” meaning by chance or fortune. It is where we get our word, “happenstance,” or by chance. Being happy then is a come and go emotion dictated by our emotions and circumstances.

Holiness, however, is a state of being, and comes from the word meaning to set something apart from something else. God is holy, that is, He is apart from everything that is evil. And He calls us to be holy as well.

Quoting from the Law of Moses in Leviticus 11:44-45, the Apostle Peter tells us, “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:15-16)

The Apostle Paul explains it this way, “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” (2 Corinthians 12:14)

Therefore, let us follow the Lord in all that we do, separating ourselves from the sins and evil of this world.
