Today’s Devotional: “Hope Springs Eternal”

While pulling out a quad pad of paper to write, I saw the words at the top, “Hope Springs Eternal.” Obviously, the Lord meant for them to be written, but for whatever reason I left them on the pad.

I wondered how many of us leave the promises of God because we’ve lost hope in the face of circumstances. But hope springs eternal. There’s always hope. When things seem hopeless, we’re to trust in hope.

Abraham was the classic example of someone with no hope for the future.

Family size was large in those days, both literally and figuratively. Having sons and daughters signified prosperity and God’s blessings, but Abraham had neither because his wife, Sarah, was barren.

But listen to Abraham’s testimony, “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations.” (Romans 4:18)

What did “Against all hope” mean? Not only was Sarah barren, but she was also past her prime and past the age at which she could have children. At this time, she was 90 years old.

Abraham could have easily fallen into despair and depression. He would have had no one to carry on his name or his legacy. But Abraham knew where his hope lay and in whom it rested.

Instead of turning to wine to numb his despair, he turned to the Lord and remembered the promises given that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in heaven and the sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17).

Abraham’s hope was in God, and in God he believed, continuing to live life to the fullest, giving his frustrations and fears to the Lord, knowing that God’s thoughts and plans for his life were of peace, not of evil, to give him a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
