“Getting Back to Where We Belong”
By Dennis Lee
Most believers in Christ would like is a revival to take place within the church.
The only problem is that we’re losing our way, because we’ve forgotten where we come from. Church today is now basing its operation more on formats and formulas rather than look to Jesus Christ, the head of the church.
Therefore we need get back to our beginnings, that is, what the church was meant to be. We need to get back to God.
But this is nothing new. God has been telling His people this for a long time.
“Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’” (Jeremiah 6:16)
“Because My people have forgotten Me … they have caused themselves to stumble in their ways, from the ancient paths.” (Jeremiah 18:15)
To the church Jesus said, “I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place–unless you repent.” (Revelation 2:4-5)
The Lord is telling the church to stop all the nonsense of what it’s trying to become and get back to the basic, that is, back to its roots of worship and of proper doctrine.
“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house, and proclaim there this word, … Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.’” (Jeremiah 7:2-3)
When we amend our ways we will have success in life and eternal life to come. But if we don’t then we’re storing up for ourselves God’s wrath. (Romans 2:4-9)
We need to get back to the basics. We must humble ourselves, pray and seek God’s face, turn from our wicked ways (repent), preach and teach God’s word and God’s word alone, and ask God to endue us with Holy Spirit power.
We need to preach the necessity of Christ’s atoning death and of the necessity of a new birth, not into a religion, but into Jesus Christ. We must fully surrender everything and be willing to spend all that we are for the sake of the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
If we don’t then our fate might be similar to that of Harvard University. Harvard was chartered to train ministers to take God’s word out to the masses. Its doctrine was God centered and Christ exalting, but now has become a place that does the exact opposite.
Harvard has forgotten God and has turned from the ancient paths.
This is the same fate of our churches today unless we repent.
Let’s get back the message of Jesus Christ and Him crucified as the Apostle Paul suggests.
“For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2)
