Get to Know the Holy Spirit
We want the experience of the Holy Spirit, but not necessarily the relationship.
Like sex, we want the experience but not necessarily the relationship the true experience requires.
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead, and as a person He can be grieved and hurt when all we want is what we can get from Him, and not get to know Him personally. When all we seek from the Holy Spirit are the gifts and experiences, then our love for Him is conditional.
We are told to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Please understand that we cannot love a thing like that, but rather we can only love a person, and this love, this unconditional love cannot only be directed towards the Father and Son, but also to the Holy Spirit who lives inside of us.
We need to know the Holy Spirit. But I’m not talking about just knowing about the Holy Spirit, or giving mental assent to the Holy Spirit, but rather we are to get to know the Holy Spirit in the fullest measure possible. The Hebrew word “to know,” is “yada.” It means to know intimately like a husband or wife knows their spouse. So we are to get to know the Holy Spirit intimately, and why not, He already knows everything about us.
“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26)
The Holy Spirit knows us better than we know ourselves. So if we want to know more about how God made us and about the purpose He has for our lives, doesn’t it make sense to get to know the Holy Spirit more intimately?
Don’t’ just seek the experience; rather seek the Person of the Holy Spirit. The rest happens through relationship.
