Fully Awake

Tuesday’s Thought “Fully Awake”

Reading again the Mount of Transformation story, I saw something that captured my attention. Here was Jesus, completely transformed into the fullness of His glory (Luke 9:29). But here is the interesting part, Peter, James, and John, who accompanied Him didn’t fully recognize Him or what was truly going on, because they were still extremely drowsy.

They weren’t sleeping, but they weren’t totally awake. And it wasn’t until they were “FULLY” awake that they saw Jesus in all His glory, along with Moses and Elijah.

“But Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who stood with Him.” (Luke 9:32)

Like the disciples, we become drowsy in our spiritual walk, when instead, we should be paying attention. An important part of the spiritual life is staying awake so that we can sense and see God working in our midst, and to see the fullness of His glory.

This was what the Apostle Paul tells the church in Ephesus. He tells them not to have fellowship with the works of darkness, but to expose them. But they were too drowsy. Therefore, in Ephesians 5:14 he said, “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”
