Fat and Sassy

“But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you grew fat, you grew thick, you are obese! Then he forsook God who made him, and scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation.” (Deuteronomy 32:15)

In this song of Moses, he is speaking to the children of Israel. The name “Jeshurun” is a name of affection used by God for His people. It means, “upright one.”

So what happened? Instead of being upright, they became twisted by not following God at His word. You might say they grew fat and sassy.

First they grew fat and kicked against God and His ways.

Jesus talked about this when He said to Paul, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” (Acts 9:5) In other words, Jesus had been nudging Paul all along, but Paul resisted.

But by kicking against the prodding of God only made matters worse for Israel as they grew fat and thick. Literally this says they became gross in their fatness.

When we continue to sit back and not act in accordance with God and His word, in God’s eyes we end up becoming just as obese.

Finally it got to be so bad they started to sass God, that is, they began to talk back with attitude, which is a dangerous place to be. They scornfully esteemed the Rock of their salvation, who is none other than Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

How do we counter this trend of becoming fat and sassy?

Spiritual exercise. Going to the spiritual gym and working out: Getting out our Bibles and consuming their contents, along with taking time to pray and worship, along with the other spiritual disciplines.

“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8)

So start getting in spiritual shape and counter the ever-growing desire to get fat and sassy.
