Building God’s Temple

What really is the Lord’s house that we should be building?

While David couldn’t build the Temple because he was a man of war and had spilt much blood, 1 Chronicles 28:3, he did prepare everything necessary to build it for his son, Solomon.

He said to the people, “Now set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God. Therefore arise and build the sanctuary of the Lord God, to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy articles of God into the house that is to be built for the name of the Lord.” (1 Chronicles 22:19)

Today there are a lot of church building programs, and while we need to have a place to meet and gather, should we really be spending so much time and effort in their planning and preparation?

Personally I think we spend too much time on the building of brick and mortar, and not enough time preparing our hearts and the hearts of others for God’s true tabernacle He is building within us.

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

When we come to faith in Jesus Christ, God builds His temple within each one of us. The Apostle Paul said that we are temples of the living God, 2 Corinthians 6:16.

In his first letter he wrote, “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19)

So let’s take King David’s advice and set our hearts and soul to seek after the Lord and to build up the temple of the living God within us.

How can this be done? Through daily reading God’s word, prayer, and worship.

And so instead of building a brick and mortar building for God, let’s first start to build up the house of God within us.
