Today’s Devotional: “Beyond Our Comprehension”

“The temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.” (Revelation 15:8)

At this time, God is going to pour out His wrath upon humanity’s many ages of transgression. Never again would God flood the earth, but that never meant He would tolerate sin forever.

Up to this point, God has used everything in His arsenal to bring us to repentance, from His grace, mercy, compassion, and love to His divine discipline and judgment. He even used the greatest gift and made the greatest sacrifice by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross, taking our place and dying the death we deserve so our sins can be forgiven.

What caught my attention in this passage is that no one, not even the angelic beings or the elders who sit before God’s throne, could enter His holy temple and abide in His presence at this time.

Why?

Is there still an aspect of God that is unapproachable? Is God’s power and wrath so great that no created being, whether redeemed or not, can be in His presence?

Is the Lord so irreconcilable that He wants no rejoicing or praise in His presence while His judgment and wrath are being poured out on His creation?

Is God weeping and mourning, wanting only to grieve within Himself because no one else could possibly understand it to its fullest extent?

I honestly don’t know, and what I have found is that there will be times in my life and in human history when we’ll never know the answer.

Instead of wondering about what we’ll never know, we should live with the revelation we have already received. This doesn’t mean we should never seek God in these areas, but when no answer comes and heaven is silent, we should continue doing what we have been given.
