Rediscover the Bible for Life

“Are you part of the ‘Some’?”

By Dennis Lee

Are you part of the “Some?” Are you a “Some” Christian?

What’s a “Some” Christian? They’re believers in Jesus Christ who believe they don’t have to or need to go to church.

“Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:23-25; emphasis mine).

Church has become mostly irrelevant to people. They say they don’t have time. They say Sunday is their only day off, or Sunday is the day they work around the house. Therefore they leave God’s house for their own homes, and worship their possessions rather than worship the Lord God.

Listen to what the Lord says to “Some” Christians.

“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: This people says, ‘The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.’ Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying, ‘Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins?’ Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Consider your ways! You have sown much, and bring in little; you eat, but do not have enough; you drink, but you are not filled with drink; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.’ Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Consider your ways! Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,’ says the Lord.’” (Haggai 1:2-8).

But “Some” Christians say church is irrelevant.

A man was complaining how the sermons at his church really don’t do anything for him, and how over the last 15 years he can’t remember a single sermon he had heard. His friend said that he had been eating his wife’s meals for the past 15 years and he couldn’t remember one meal in particular, but he knew that if he didn’t eat them he would definitely be the worst for it.

The problem with “Some” Christians is they have the wrong view about church. They think it’s all about them. They forget that church isn’t about them, it’s about “one another” and to encourage one another toward love and good works.

Our society is on the decline, not only economically but morally as well. The wicked seem to prosper, while those who hold to the truth and do what is right seem to suffer.

When we see this it becomes discouraging, which is why we need to go to church to find out what God says.

When the Psalmist became discouraged he said, “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me – until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood their end.” (Psm. 73:16-17)

Stop being part of the “Some” and start being a part of the faithful. And when you do, the Lord promises that you will take root in good soil, flourish and multiply.
