Before Becoming a Warrior

Today’s Devotional: “Before Becoming a Warrior”

In the maxim we repeat every Sunday at Living Waters Fellowship, we say we are mighty men and women of valor. But there is something we must be before we become warriors, something that can help turn us into mighty men and women of valor.

Before the David and Goliath story, another episode in David’s life led to his great victory over Goliath.

You see, the first thing David was known for wasn’t his fighting prowess, although killing a lion and a bear is no easy feat. Rather, David was first known as a worshipper of God. In fact, He is known more as a worshipper than as a warrior, and to verify that, all we need to do is look at the Psalms.

First, we must be worshippers before becoming warriors.

We see this in the description of David by Saul’s servant. “Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.’” (1 Samuel 16:18)

David’s first opportunity to serve God came through his worship of the Lord. We are told that whenever the distressing spirit fell upon Saul, he sent for David to come and worship God in his presence. It also says that Saul was refreshed and renewed when David worshiped God (1 Samuel 16:23).

Our battle begins not in the mission field but in our quiet time before the Lord. The Holy Spirit’s anointing on our witness and ministry first flows from our quiet time, our worship of the Lord.

Therefore, like David, we need to be worshipers first before we can become warriors.
