The Promise of Emptiness

Today’s Devotional: “The Promise of Emptiness”

In our world, we’re taught: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Many have fallen for the world’s empty promises and are suspicious of anything or anyone that claims we can get something for nothing.

We watch TV, and the ads tell us that we can be happy, rich, or famous if we just buy a certain product. So, it doesn’t take long before we see that the world’s promises are empty.

But God’s promises are different. They always come true. The Apostle Paul said all the promises in Christ Jesus are yes and amen (2 Corinthians 1:20).

And on Easter, God gave us emptiness filled with promise.

It all began with the empty cross.

The empty cross reminds us of God’s promise that we are forgiven. On the cross, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins. God’s word says, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” (Romans 5:8)

Next, the empty tomb.

The truth of the empty tomb is Jesus Christ’s resurrection and the promise that we will be raised to eternal life.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” (John 11:25-26)

And finally, the empty grave clothes are there.

The empty grave clothes symbolize that Jesus is alive and desires fellowship with us. His goal is to build a personal relationship with each of us.

And so, the emptiness of Easter reveals that the cross couldn’t hold Him so that our sins could be forgiven, the tomb couldn’t contain Him so that we could have eternal life, and the burial clothes no longer bound Him so that we can have a relationship with our Savior and Lord.

Share this message with those you know; it’s the promise of Easter for new life.
