Thought for Today: “How to Determine God’s Calling”

The Lord said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

Now, not many have ever heard the voice of God telling them specifically what His calling is upon their lives. So, the question becomes, “How can we know God’s calling?” This question has come up more often than most imagine. Let me therefore give you my quick answer, although it can go so much deeper.

We can know God’s calling when the gifts and talents that God gives us meets the needs of those around us, the church, and in the world, then that is a pretty good indication of God’s calling for a person’s life. Now, it may be for a time and a season, or it may be for the rest of our lives here on the earth, but that is up to God.

Further, let’s stop looking at our jobs or the work that we do as a way to make or earn a living, but rather as God’s calling for that place and time.

In the end, God will give us both the courage and the strength to fulfill what He calls us to do. Of Paul’s calling, he said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) And Paul also gives us this encouragement. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
