Today’s Devotional: “Why Did Jesus Come?”

To Redeem Us

 “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law.” (Galatians 4:4-5)

Everyone is subject to the law and its requirements. So, Jesus came in the fullness of time, born of a woman, and made under the law, to redeem us.

Jesus came to be our redeemer. He didn’t come to help us live moral lives, to bring another philosophy of life, or to establish a new government. Jesus came to pay the ransom price required by the law for our sins, something that none of us could do on our own (Psalms 49:8-9).

The Bible states that the wages of sin is death, and that everyone has sinned. So, the cost is more than we can afford.

But why did Jesus do that? So that we could become His children.

“But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.” (Galatians 4:4-6)

Jesus didn’t come to give us nice Christmas presents; He came to give us the greatest gift of all—to redeem us and make us God’s children, members of His divine family.

Paul said in Romans 8:15, “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”

“Abba” Romans 8:15″ is an Aramaic word used as a term of endearment. In English, we would say, “Papa” or “Daddy.”

Paul is saying that through faith in Jesus Christ, we are no longer slaves to this world; instead, we are children of the Most High God, making us heirs of heaven. That truly is the greatest Christmas gift ever.
