Where Did God Come From?

Today’s Devotional: “Where Did God Come From?”

Where did God come from? This may be the best answer. “He came from nowhere. He always was and always will be.”

I think the Lord Himself answered the question best when He called Moses to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage.

Moses asked, “When I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” (Exodus 3:13)

The Lord replied, “‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14)

In Hebrew, “I AM” is the word “Ehyeh,” meaning “existed.” God was declaring his independence from everything, including time and space. He is the self-existent one.

In essence, God has no origin. This is foreign to our limited, finite mindset, because we believe something must be created for something to exist. But God was never created; He always was. In our minds, whatever exists must have had a cause, but nothing else caused God. God is self-caused.

Humanity, unfortunately, is quite uncomfortable with the idea of God being self-existent and self-caused because He is not only beyond our ability to comprehend but also because He isn’t dependent upon humanity for His being.

So how can we possibly benefit from this little piece of theology about the self-existence of God?

We have been created in the image and likeness of God, and therefore we are completely and totally dependent upon Him for our being, as the Apostle Paul said, “For in him we live and move and have our being.” (Acts 17:28)

If we ever reach the point where we stop believing in God, whether God doesn’t exist or God has a cause, then we have no purpose and no existence.

God is the great ‘I AM’!
