When Satan Attacks

Today’s Devotional: “When Satan Attacks”

When we’re not where we’re supposed to be, we’re most vulnerable to Satan’s attacks.

“It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.” (2 Samuel 11:1-2)

And so, the David and Bathsheba saga began, ending with her becoming pregnant, David having her husband murdered, war becoming a permanent part of King David’s legacy, and the child born of this union dying.

“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God;’ for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” (James 1:13-16)

David was tempted because he wasn’t where he belonged and wasn’t doing what he was supposed to do. It says that this was the time when the “kings go out to battle.” King David was supposed to be with his men at the battlefront, not in the comforts and pleasures of the city. It was then that he was tempted; it was then that he fell into sin, and that sin brought about death.

I find that when we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing, when we’re not in the Word, in prayer, and worshiping the Lord, that’s when Satan brings his temptations. Since I’m now at my weakest, I’m more likely to act on the temptation and sin.

Satan never quits but always seeks any opportunity he can. When Satan couldn’t tempt Jesus in the wilderness, he waited for a more opportune time (Luke 4:13).
