Today’s Devotional: “What’s Happened to Thanksgiving?”

America is no longer “One Nation Under God.” We’re a country where our spiritual life no longer revolves around God or His church. Instead, we’re a nation that gathers in sports complexes to watch our modern-day gladiators battle it out on football fields, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, and other sporting venues that capture the heart and mind of our country.

We are also a nation that has removed God, who helped establish this country, from every part of our national life, where the Bible is being taken out of our schools and the Ten Commandments from our public buildings.

What we face today is mostly the same challenge the Pilgrims confronted in England. The government is trying to control the church. Government officials are undermining the church’s ability to speak out against abortion and sexual immorality.

We are seeing state and local officials restricting and prohibiting public worship while allowing violent protests in our streets.

And those who influence our youth are anything but Christian, and our youth are following them like lemmings off a cliff into the dark abyss.

And when it comes to celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s no longer a celebration of God’s blessings; instead, it’s become a time of overeating and watching TV.

Furthermore, Thanksgiving Day is hardly more than a precursor to Christmas. Is it any surprise that the day after Thanksgiving is called “Black Friday”? It helps retailers avoid losing money, allowing them to turn a profit.

It seems like America today is losing the ability to thank God for His blessings. Christian missionary Elwood McQuaid said, “We are rapidly becoming a nation of ingrates – people for whom too much is never enough.”

We’re leaving God out of our Thanksgiving holiday and replacing Him with idols and gluttony. We need to return to our roots and give God thanks. “
