Thought For Today: “Watch and Pray”

On the night Jesus was betrayed, they traveled to the Garden of Gethsemane. After leaving the disciples, He went farther into the Garden to pray. Before He did, He asked Peter, James, and John to come further with Him and watch (or pray) with Him.

But as they watched and prayed, they fell asleep.

When Jesus returned, He woke them and said, “What? Could you not watch with Me for one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:40-41)

Jesus is coming back for all of us and for this lost and dying world, and He desires that we watch, pray, and wait for His return. Yet, like the disciples, we are lulled into sleep along the way.

Jesus says, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” (Matthew 24:42)
