Thought For Today: “Unity’s Death Blow”
Gossip is unity’s deathblow.
Gossip is unrestrained conversations about others not within the circle of the conversation, and it usually involves information that cannot be confirmed as true and doesn’t allow the person being talked about to respond.
The Apostle Paul labels those who gossip as untrustworthy and meddlesome, speaking when they shouldn’t (1 Timothy 5:13).
Nothing tears apart the unity of the church like gossip. Therefore, it cannot be tolerated because it brings hell’s fire into God’s house.
“The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (James 3:6)
But in Proverbs 26:20 we are also told, “Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops”
The church is the body of Christ and the thought of tearing it apart, dividing Christ’s body through the unrestrained tongue of gossip is heart wrenching, and we should mourn if we continue to allow it to happen. Instead we should stop all gossip, and that begins when we stop listening.
