Today’s Devotional: “The Light of God”

The Golden Lampstand, also referred to as the Menorah, was to be continually maintained by the priest to be a perpetual light, that is, a light that continually shined not only to light the inside of the tabernacle, but also God’s light to the world.

The Menorah is the most common symbol for Judaism and is symbolic of Israel’s light-bearing function.

And so it was that Israel brought forth the ultimate light bearer, Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Through the prophet Isaiah the coming Messiah, which Jesus referenced Himself as being, said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” (Luke 4:18; cf. Isaiah 61:1-2)

But when Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised the anointing of the Holy Spirit to His disciples, so that they could praise and proclaim His glorious light.

“You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ … that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:5, 9)

But even more, as His disciples are to be that perpetual light.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14)

But it’s not our own light we shine, but the light of Jesus, the true light of God.

But what keeps our lamps lit? It’s our constant attendance of the Holy Spirit’s anointing. It’s being baptized in the Holy Spirit, filled and anointed so that we can be that continuously burning light in a sin darkened world.
