Today’s Devotional: “The Book of Life”
God’s final judgment will be based on who is written in the Book of Life, also called “the Lamb’s Book of Life.” This is the book Jesus will use when He judges in the end, because the Father has given Jesus the ultimate authority.
Jesus said, “For the Father … has committed all judgment to the Son … he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (John 5:22-24)
The Book of Life is a record where the names of all the righteous are written, and they will receive eternal life. However, those not written in this book will face everlasting death.
In Psalm 69:28, foretelling the Messiah’s death at the hands of wicked men, King David writes, “May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.”
Their ending will not be pretty. “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)
Those written in the Book of Life are followers of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul describes them as fellow workers in the gospel message (Philippians 4:3).
Jesus refers to them as overcomers. “He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life.” (Revelation 3:5a)
Their ending will be in God’s presence in heavenly Jerusalem.
“But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” (Revelation 12:27)
Having our names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life means being born again, which is a new spiritual birth through faith in Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)
