Take the Middle Ground

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Take the Middle Ground”

Now, this could be taken in many ways, and most people think it speaks of compromise and not standing up for what we say we believe in.

But it isn’t. It’s speaking about something entirely different.

It comes from Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, where he tells believers, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3)

But this, like most everything else, can be taken to the extreme. Yes, we aren’t to be conceited in thinking that we’re all that and more. But this can go too far where we think of ourselves as less than what God has made us to be.

You see, we have all been made in the image and likeness of the Lord God Himself (Genesis 1:26).

Therefore, we are of great value to God, and that’s because God doesn’t make junk. Junk is created when we take that which is good and destroy it, which is what Adam and Eve did, and this was then pass on to us in our DNA.

But that is why Jesus came. To bring us back into that right relationship with the Father. We are now made right with God through the righteousness of Jesus who lives in all those who believe.

And so, there is no Middle Ground. We are sons and daughters, children, of the Most High God, having that image and likeness of God restored through Jesus’s death and resurrection. Therefore, we are of great value and highly esteemed.

We have incredible value to God even though we sin and continue to fail Him. And while we shouldn’t think too highly of ourselves, we also shouldn’t think too lowly either. Instead, let our thought be consumed with Jesus Christ and then who we are in Him.
