Thought for Today: “Putting Death to Death”
When Jesus said, “It is finished,” and died on the cross, He forgave our sin and put it to death. And when He rose from the dead, He put death to death. More literally, death died.
Jesus foretold this end to death when He raised Lazarus from the dead.
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” (John 11:25–26)
This is the good news. Jesus conquered not only sin on the cross but also death when He rose from the dead. And since death could no longer hold Him, it can no longer hold everyone who believes in Him either.
Therefore, we have nothing to fear. Death hasn’t taken a holiday; it’s been forever eradicated for those who believe. All it takes is belief in Jesus. To Mary and Martha, Lazarus’s sisters, and then to all of us, Jesus says, “Do you believe this?” (John 11:26)
