Thought For Today: “Put God First”

As we approach Christmas this year, let’s make sure we get this down before anything else.

Is God first in our lives? It is often said that if we want to know what the most important thing in our lives is, we should look at our checkbooks. Are we giving to God the first, and by that the best?

When they came into the land God has given to them, the Promise Land, Moses commanded that they bring the Lord the first fruit that comes from the ground (Deuteronomy 26:10).

Like the Israelites we need to bring God the first and the best realizing it all belongs to Him anyway, and it’s by His grace that He has given it to us.

Far too often, however, after our budgets, we consider the portion we give from whatever is left over. This is neither first, nor is it the best, and then we wonder why God isn’t pleased, and why we aren’t being blessed.

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:9-10)

If we want God to bless us financially, then we must handle our finances God’s way and put Him first.

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
