Thought For Today: “Prayer that Prevails”
Jonathan Edwards, who was the one of the central figures in the revival known as the First Great Awakening and delivered one of the most memorial sermons from that time, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” said, “There are two kinds of means requisite to promote a revival: the one to influence men, the other to influence God. The truth is employed to influence men, and prayer to move God.”
Edwards goes on to say that moving God doesn’t mean we change His mind, but rather prayer changes us making it possible for God to do His mighty work in us and through us.
The truth Edwards refers to is the truth of the gospel message, the truth of God’s word, the Bible, but without prayer and the Holy Spirit directing both God’s truth and prayer, then our preaching and teaching will produce little when it comes to our need for God to pour out a revival in our land.
Therefore, let’s not lose heart “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” (Ephesians 6 :18a)
