Today’s 333 Devotional: “Look Up”
Ever see people walking and texting at the same time. I remember seeing someone almost get run over when they failed to look up when crossing a street.
Whenever I see someone texting while walking, I want to say, “Look up.”
I would often have the same talk with some of the youth in our community. Often when talking to me, they would have their heads down, and I would continually remind them to lift their heads and look at me.
This got me thinking about our relationship with God.
The Bible says that we are to bow in humble reverence to the Lord.
“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” (Psalm 95:6)
We see the same need to bow in reverence to God by King David saying, “By your great love, can come into your house; in reverence I bow down toward your holy temple.” (Psalm 5:7)
But David also said that while seeking the Lord, it was the Lord who lifted his head (Psalm 3:3).
And so, while we are to bow in reverence before the Lord, He lifts our head so that we can get a good view of Him and of His ways.
To Abraham the Lord said for him to lift up his eyes and look at the land that he was about to inherit (Genesis 13:14). And He also told Abraham to look up to the heavens saying, “Look up at the sky and count the stars … so shall your offspring be.” (Genesis 15:5).
The Psalmist said, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2). And Jesus tells us to lift up our heads, because our redemption is close (Luke 21:28).
And so, while we are to bow our head in reverence, we also need to lift them up to see what God is doing.
