How’s Our Testimony?

Today’s 333 Devotional: “How’s Our Testimony?”

After reading about Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot’s testimony for God wasn’t good, and ended up disastrously.

It started when Lot left Abraham for what he thought was something better. It says, “Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere … like the garden of the Lord.” (Genesis 13:10)

First it says Lot pitch his tent towards Sodom (Genesis 13:12). But soon he was living among them (Genesis 14:12). And even though he had been delivered by Abraham from captivity to the kings that conquered the city, he went right back, and that is where we find him in our story.

“Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.” (Genesis 19:1a)

His testimony for the Lord had become so compromised that he offered his daughters to immoral men to protect the angels (Genesis 19:8). In fact, the daughter’s soon to be husbands, when Lot told them of the coming destruction, didn’t believe him, therefore they died with the rest of the inhabitants when God reigned down fire and brimstone (Genesis 19:15).

And what’s worse about this compromise is that the angels forcibly had to remove Lot and his family from the city, and that Lot’s wife didn’t take seriously their command not to look back (Genesis 19:17). And so, as she turned to look back, she was turned into a pillar of salt.

All this to warn us to be careful that we have what Paul told Timothy and that is “A good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.” (1 Timothy 3:7)

Also, we have what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 6:17, “‘Come out from them and be separate,’ says the Lord. ‘Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.’”

Therefore, let’s improve our testimony for God by obeying His word, will and way.
