Today’s Thought: “Goodness is No Guarantee Against Weakness”
There’s nothing that humanity isn’t capable of, both good and bad. In fact, King David went from good, too bad, and even worse.
From good when God said, “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” (Acts 13:22) To bad when David saw Bathsheba and committed adultery, and then to make matters worse, he had her husband, Uriah, killed to hide the affair.
You see, goodness is no guarantee that we will not sin.
So, what are we to do?
First, pray as Jesus taught, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” (Matthew 6:13) Next, run away as Paul tells Timothy, “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:22) And then run to Jesus, the rock of our salvation and refuge in our time of need.
And if we fall, we need to confess, seek God’s forgiveness, and repent.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) And then it’s all about knowing full well that He hears our prayers and will give us the grace and mercy we need to turn from our sin and follow Him (Hebrews 4:16).
