God’s Word is Our Defense

In Jeremiah chapter 26 the people wanted to kill Jeremiah for prophesying against their disobedience and Jerusalem’s eventual ruin, but Ahikam, son of the royal secretary, came to Jeremiah’s defense.

He turned to the Scriptures and reminded the people of how the prophet Micah prophesied against Jerusalem in the days of Hezekiah, and how neither the king nor the people put him to death. Instead they repented and the Lord relented.

He then reminded the people of another prophet, Uriah, and how he prophesied the same thing, but instead of repenting the people hunted him down and killed him, and how God’s hand was then against Jerusalem. This was something everyone knew.

Ahikam defended Jeremiah based upon the truth of history, the same history that has been written down for us in God’s word.

God’s word is not some revised history to help shape people’s thoughts; rather it is the uncensored word of God written for our edification

2 Timothy 3:16-says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

In saying that the Bible is “profitable,” the Apostle Paul is literally saying that it is useful, beneficial, and advantageous for our lives in teaching what is true, reproving what isn’t, along with correcting and instructing us on how to get and stay right with God.

And so like Jeremiah we are commanded by God to speak the truth no matter the consequences.

To Jeremiah the Lord said, “Speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Do not diminish a word. Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may relent concerning the calamity which I purpose to bring on them because of the evil of their doings” (Jeremiah 26:2-3)
