Giving Honor Where Honor is Due

Being right and doing right don’t always go hand in hand in today’s society.

When the Apostle Paul was brought before the Jewish high court, the high priest, Ananias, ordered those standing next to Paul to hit him in the mouth. Paul called him a hypocrite (“whitewashed wall”) because he sat in judgment but violated the law in having him struck.

While Paul was right in his assessment, he didn’t go about it in the right way. Finding out it was the high priest, he apologized saying, “I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.” (Acts 23:5 NIV)

God is the one who sets up and takes down those who rule or have authority over our lives. Therefore it’s not our place to do so, nor to curse or to speak against them no matter how bad or wrong they may be.

“The Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes.” (Daniel 4:17b NIV)

In the law it says, “Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.” (Exodus 22:28 NIV)

When we curse or speak against those in authority we are actually charging a wrong against God, because He’s the one who set them in that position.

David wouldn’t allow one of his men to kill king Saul, even though God had anointed David as king. David even felt bad when he cut a corner of Saul’s robe. He said, “Who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?” (1 Samuel 26:9 NKJV)

The Apostle Paul said, “Be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.” (Titus 3:1-2 NKJV)

To be right we have to do right and give honor where God bestows it.
