Celebrate True Freedom

On Wednesday America celebrates our nation’s birth when the Continental Congress voted to accept the Declaration of Independence. And so we’ll celebrate this day in a variety of ways, from back yard barbeques, to parades and fireworks.

But little do we honor and celebrate those brave men and their families who endured great sacrifice to sign it. Some suffered capture and torture. Others lost their homes and businesses with several dying penniless and living off the charity of others. Nine were killed during the revolution, but not one of them betrayed their pledge.

As Christians how do we celebrate our spiritual liberty? It starts with honoring Jesus who suffered and died upon the cross, paying in full the debt owed for our sin and offering new life and spiritual freedom to all those who believe.

Today, let’s celebrate not only our national freedom from political tyranny, but also our spiritual freedom from sin and death.

The Bible says, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)
Yes we are free, but not free to do as we want, but free to do as God desires, which is to live righteously and to follow His commands.

The Apostle Paul said, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

So with the freedom we have been given let’s honor God by making a difference for Christ in our communities and world that we live in. Celebrate true freedom by celebrating His life, death, and resurrection.

“But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” (Romans 6:17-18)
