Thought for Today: “Breath and Living Water”

Without air, a person can only survive for around three minutes, and without water they can only survive around three days.

How appropriate that the Holy Spirit is referred to as both breath and living water.

In the Bible, both the Hebrew and Greek words for spirit “Ruach,” and “Pneuma”, means a breeze, air in motion, and breath.

Jesus uses these meanings talking about the Holy Spirit.

About the Holy Spirit being breath and wind, He said, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:7-8)

He also said in John 20:21-22, “‘Peace to you! As the Father sent me, I also send you.’ And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”

But the Bible also refers the Holy Spirit to Water.

Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit.” (John 7:37-39)

And so, while our physical body cannot survive without air and water, our spirit cannot survive without the air and water of the Holy Spirit.
