Today’s 333 Devotional: “A Matter of Faithfulness”
This isn’t something we like reading because it hits us right between the eyes.
How faithful are we?
Through the prophet Jeremiah God gives Israel an object lesson because they weren’t faithful to His commandments. He invites the Rechabites into the Temple and offers them a glass of wine, but they refused. (Jeremiah 35)
Jonadab the Rechabite was involved in government as a part of Jehu’s reign over Israel. He, therefore, had a good view of the destructiveness living a life for the world brings. To protect his family, Jonadab made them swear an oath to keep themselves from wine and forbade them from building homes or planting crops. Instead, they were to be nomads, living in tents and raising livestock.
For 200 years they remained faithful, and God rewarded them while pronouncing judgment upon the unfaithfulness of Judah. (Jeremiah 35:17, 19)
We are often tempted to slack off when our zeal, faithfulness, and obedience to God begins to wane. This is seen throughout church history. Today, many mainline denominations are a far cry from when they were first founded. Traditions have replaced passion, and societal norms are replacing biblical truth.
Are we individually and as a church living out biblical Christian faith? Are we remaining faithful to God’s call and His word?
God is not impressed with a half-baked church or Christian life, that is, He’s not impressed with a church or Christians that are faithful in some areas but not in all aspects of the faith.
Are we faithful in our giving and meeting the needs of others? Are we faithful in our fellowship, worship of God, and our witness? Are we faithful in our reading and studying God’s word, in our individual and corporate prayer life, and in our reverence for God waiting with anticipation and expectation?
Let’s begin today to seek God’s forgiveness for our unfaithfulness and turn to our faithful and loving God, because while we remain faithless, He remains faithful. (2 Timothy 2:13)
