Today’s Devotional: “A Languishing Soul”

It’s not easy to wait patiently, especially when it comes to waiting on the Lord.

Psalm 119: 81-88 says, “My soul faints for Your salvation, but I hope in Your word. My eyes fail from searching Your word, saying, ‘When will You comfort me?’ … Yet I do not forget Your statutes … Revive me according to Your lovingkindness, so that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.”

This passage seems to resonate within our souls because deep down, as we wait for God’s promises, our souls are languishing; that is, they’re losing energy as we long to move forward and to hear God’s word of revival break forth.

The reason is that we’re tired of waiting, and the hope that God’s glory will shine through us, as it did in the beginning, is fading into a dull memory as we serve the Lord more out of obligation than joy.

“I know your works, your labor, your patience … (but) you have left your first love. Remember, therefore, from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works.” (Revelation 2:2-5)

While we are serving the Lord, we need to be patient, and there should also be an expectation and anticipation of God’s ultimate salvation within our souls. His lovingkindness will manifest itself as the Lord’s work is accomplished and a revival takes place.

Solomon seemed to languish as he waited, yet he knew the blessing that awaited him.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” (Revelation 2:2-5)

Therefore, we need to pray that God’s word would take hold of our soul and spirit and that nothing in this world, in our flesh, or from Satan would distract us from this endeavor.

“To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” (Revelation 2:7)
