Today’s Devotional: “Peace Of God”
Besides peace with God, Jesus, our Prince of Peace, also brings the peace of God.
Until we reach heaven, there are some things we’ll never fully know or understand. Paul says, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Our vision of the world around us is not fully clear. We will not know the “why’s” and “wherefores” we so desperately long for. Further, there are things that will happen, bringing pain, grief, and sorrow, that we’re not prepared for.
But the peace of God is knowing that God is sovereign and in control. Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi says it best.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
Notice that this peace is beyond our understanding. It transcends all human wisdom and knowledge. You might say it is unimaginable peace, because our limited intellect can never grasp the limitless, infinite peace of God.
The peace of God anchors our souls and keeps us safe from the storms that continue to assail us as our world crumbles.
Our problem is that we try to control situations, even our destinies, rather than finding peace in knowing that God is in control.
It’s a peace that begins in the heart, as Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45).
This then goes a long way toward explaining Paul’s statement that the peace of God should rule in our hearts.
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15)
