What Difference?

Today’s Devotional: “What Difference?”

In a few weeks, America will celebrate what is called Easter, which really has nothing to do with a bunny and egg-laying, but rather it is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest event of all time. It is the most powerful event in human history, surpassing volcanic eruptions, devastating earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, or even a nuclear explosion—all combined. In fact, it is more powerful than Superman, and yes, I did just go there.

And the reason I bring this up is that the resurrection of Jesus divided history into two parts: B.C. and A.D.. That is what I call powerful. In fact, it is so impactful that it can change the direction and course of all our lives.

And, while I know that our calendars are based on Jesus’s birth and not His resurrection, if it hadn’t been for His resurrection, there would be no reason to record or even celebrate Jesus’s birth, and thus to change humanity’s calendar. In fact, there would be no need to celebrate Christmas or for any of us to come on Sunday morning to worship Him.

Now, in our society, most people ask, “So what?  What difference does the resurrection of Jesus make, and how does it apply to me? So, what if Jesus is alive? What’s the big deal? How can something that happened 2000 years ago affect my life today?”

What difference does Jesus’s resurrection make? If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then everything we believe and cling to is empty, useless, and lacks meaning.

What difference does Jesus’s resurrection make? Because Jesus died and rose from the dead, our sins are forgiven, we have a purpose to live out through the power and promises of Jesus Christ, and our eternal future is secured in heaven.

The message of Jesus’s resurrection is that we can have a new and eternal life with God.
