The Unhealthy Art of Compromise

Today’s Devotional: “The Unhealthy Art of Compromise”

When we compromise in one area, we end up compromising in just about every area of our lives.

David compromised his faith by entering the land of the Philistines to escape Saul. God never instructed David to go; instead, he reasoned it out on his own, marking the beginning of David’s life of compromise (1 Samuel 27).

David was now relying on the favor of Achish, king of Gath, instead of trusting in the Lord. Gath was the city where Goliath was born, and Achish was the king whom David helped to defeat.

David’s compromise now leaves him living with the enemy of his faith and his people.

But David’s compromise didn’t end there. While he and his men lived there, they defeated Israel’s enemies, but in the process, they killed everyone—including women and children—so no one could tell on him, because then he would have to leave his compromised life.

David continued this deception by lying to Achish, claiming they raided Jewish settlements. The reason for these lies was that he wanted to remain in the king’s favor so he could continue living in the enemy’s camp.

That is the unhealthy art of compromise; it always results in more compromise and dishonesty. But the saddest part is that it ultimately causes us

Therefore, that first compromised step is like walking on a landmine set to explode. Even if we compromise on something small and unimportant, it still ends up damaging other parts of our lives. It weakens our integrity and character. It harms our witness for Jesus and corrupts our thinking. In the end, it hinders our relationship with God.

Compromise is like poison; a small amount may not hurt you
