Today’s Devotional: “Life is Fleeting”
Over the years, I’ve officiated at many memorial services. These moments are never easy. As a pastor, I have a diverse purpose: to comfort those who mourn and to offer hope to everyone who attends.
But what is presented in Ecclesiastes is what holds the most significance for my purpose.
In Ecclesiastes 7:2, it says, “Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for that is the end of all men; and the living will take it to heart.”
It is during these times that people are most open to contemplating their mortality.
The Apostle James said, “You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” (James 4:14)
King David said, “Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath” (Psalm 39:4-5)
But we not only need to tell people that life is fleeting but also that there is more to this life, namely, eternal life. The question is where we will spend it.
And this is where we need to share the hope of the gospel message of Jesus Christ, that He is the only way to heaven and eternal life with God.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
Therefore, since we don’t know how much longer we have to live, shouldn’t we share this message: while life is fleeting, eternity awaits all who come to faith in Jesus Christ?
