Thought for Today: “A True Friend Always Loves”
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” (Proverbs 17:17)
A true friend isn’t a fair-weather friend, that is, someone who is only in it for what they can get out of it.
When Jonathan’s father, Saul, wanted to kill David, Jonathan went out to encourage him and made a covenant.
“Then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God.” (1 Samuel 23:16)
The Bible says of Abraham, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God.” (James 2:23)
It is our belief in God and in what Jesus did for us on the cross, taking our place and dying our death, that, like Abraham, God counts us righteous before Him and calls us friend. As such, God always loves us.
“The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: ‘Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, with lovingkindness I have drawn you.’” (Jeremiah 31:3)
