Finishing What We Start

Today’s Devotional: “Finishing What We Start”

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it–lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’” (Luke 14:28-30)

Now, a tower wasn’t a luxury; it was a necessity. It wasn’t like a second home or a new garage for more storage. Back then, a tower was essential for the community’s safety and protecting their fields from predators.

Towers were structures used for defense and protection. They were either part of a city’s wall or situated in the fields, and their purpose was to warn the city’s inhabitants or workers of any impending danger.

And so, Jesus was saying that discipleship is something everyone must intentionally build into their lives. In the Great Commission, Jesus told us to go and make disciples. There is a purpose behind our actions when we become disciples, which is what this illustration aims to show.

It’s not about conducting a cost analysis to decide whether or not to build a tower, but rather about whether we are willing to pay the price to finish it; whether we’re willing to pay the cost of discipleship.

It’s not a ‘look before you leap’ kind of proposal, but a leap nonetheless, and you should do whatever it takes to make it to the other side. It’s all about finishing.

It’s about taking the time to estimate the costs involved and gathering the necessary resources to finish. Are we willing to commit fully to completing the race and do whatever it takes to see the process through?

Therefore, the cost of discipleship is our willingness to give our all to finish well.
