Today’s Devotional: “Peace and Safety in God’s Promises”

The book of Ruth is a beautiful story about God’s love. It highlights human love and loyalty.

“Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.” (Ruth 1:16-17)

This book also highlights our need for a kinsman redeemer, which Jesus became for us. But it also reminds us not to lose hope in God’s promises, even during difficult times. This was the testimony of Elimelech’s family, which Ruth married into.

A famine was spreading across Judah as God’s punishment for His people’s idolatry and for doing whatever they believed was right, instead of trusting God and following His word.

“In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25)

Because of the famine, Elimelech moved his family away from the Promised Land to Moab to survive. There, Elimelech died along with his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion (Ruth 1:1-5).

We need to remain in God’s promises because it is through His promises that He will keep us.

“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.” (2 Corinthians 1:20)

There will be trials and tribulations as we follow Jesus by faith into God’s promises, but His lasting peace will be ours if we remain in them.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
