Thought For Today: “Why Was Martha Distracted?”
“When Jesus and the disciples visited the house of Martha and Mary, it says that while Mary sat and listened to Jesus, Martha was distracted with serving. And when she complained to Jesus, He said, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)
Looking at the church and how everyone is to function in his or her giftedness, we see that Martha’s gift was hospitality. And Jesus never rebuked her for it, and I am sure everyone appreciated the meal she prepared.
But what really distracted Martha? It wasn’t Mary, but it was doing the task on hand through her effort and desire to please, and not as unto the Lord.
Paul said, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24)
But there is more. She was also resentful. Resentful that she had to do all the work while Mary sat at Jesus’s feet. Rather than appreciating the gift God had given to her, she became resentful that Mary, and by extension others, weren’t helping.
Therefore, let’s not be resentful but rather, let’s be thankful for God calling us into His service.
