Thought for Today: “Grace to Sin?”
As Christians and relying on being forgiven, and of God’s continued forgiveness, can we continue in sin?
There are many within the church that believe that to be the case. While they know what they are doing is wrong, they continue doing it saying that God will forgive them because He is a loving and forgiving God, full of grace and mercy.
And while God is full of grace and mercy, and is a loving and forgiving God, He is also just and righteous, and as such cannot abide sin. And while God is long suffering as the Bible points out, it also points out that He is not forever suffering.
The Law states that if a person turns from their righteousness and does evil, then God will no longer remember their righteousness, that is, God’s grace and mercy will not keep them from His justice (Ezekiel 18:26-32).
Also, if we say we know God but disobey his commandments, then we are liars, breaking the 9th commandment, and the truth is no longer in us. “He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” (1 John 2:4)
Paul asks then the question, should we continue to sin so that God’s grace may abound? Here is His reply: “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” (Romans 6:1-2)
So, the answer to the question is NO!
