Thought for Today: “Agape Love”

There are many definitions of love

Back in the ’60s, the movie “Love Story” defined love as “Never having to say you’re sorry.” But if you’re married, you know it’s a fairy tale.

Then there’s the classic love ballad, “Who put the Ram in the Rama Lama Ding Dong? Who was that man, I’d like to shake his hand for making my baby fall in love with me.” And who ever said 50s songs have no content?

9-year-old Bobby composed his own love song. He said, “I’m in love with you most of the time, but don’t bother me when I’m with my friends.”

Clearly, the world has distorted the meaning of love.

Love as God intended is more than passionate romantic feelings or a sentiment found in a Hallmark card. The Bible gives the best definition of love: the Greek word “Agape.” It means unconditional; that is, it places no conditions on another person for giving or receiving love.

Agape love isn’t dependent on anything outside itself. It’s a love that gives without expecting anything in return. It’s a love that isn’t affected by the worthiness or unworthiness of the one who gives or receives it. When this love grips our hearts, it will revolutionize our lives.
