Thought for Today: “God’s Word isn’t Chained”
In 2 Timothy 2:9, the Apostle Paul writes to his young protege, Timothy, that “the word of God is not chained.” And what you might say is strange, but extremely encouraging to us today, is that he wrote these words while he was imprisoned and chained for his faith.
Paul uses this phrase to convey that even though he is physically chained and imprisoned, the message of the gospel and the teachings of Christianity are not bound or restricted by his chains. In other words, the power and influence of God’s word and the gospel message are not limited by human circumstances or the persecution of believers.
And the truth of what Paul wrote is that we see the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ continuing to spread and impact people’s lives despite the challenges faced by early Christians, even to today and what we and Christians around the world face.
What Paul wrote to Timothy should then be a source of encouragement to all believers today, and whatever they are facing, that God’s word cannot be chained and can still transform lives and bring people into the wonderful saving faith of Jesus Christ.
God’s word is therefore not chained nor constrained by human limitations or circumstances.
