We’ll Receive Whatever We Give

Whenever we discuss the topic of giving, many Christians run away. But the doctrine of giving is important to our spiritual health and welfare.

Giving isn’t tied exclusively to finances; our giving entails every area of our lives. Jesus makes it clear that we’ll receive in like manner to our giving.

“Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:36-38)

Jesus is sharing with His disciples those attitudes they are to possess along with the way they are to live and conduct their lives.

Jesus is sharing with them, along with us the life principle of giving, which is that we’ll receive back in like proportion to whatever we give – judgment for judgment, condemnation for condemnation, mercy for mercy, forgiveness for forgiveness.

Jesus says that whatever we give, it’ll be given back in like manner, and even more. It’s tied into the biblical principle of sowing and reaping. Whatever we sow in life is what we’re going to reap in return, and sometimes in even greater measure than what we’ve sown.

And while finances are not mentioned in these verses, our finances are also involved in this life principle. We are commanded in the Scriptures to bring the tithe into God’s house and God will bless abundantly removing the devourer from our lives (Malachi 3:8-11).

But giving also involves our attitude.

“You must each make up your own mind as to how much you should give. Don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves the person who gives cheerfully.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Whatever we give is what we can expect in return.
