Today’s Devotional: “Victory Over Depression and Loss”

Seeing the amount of depression and loss that we have suffered through with the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a story from the Bible that should help us gain the upper hand. It is a story from the life of David.

After being rejected by the Philistine lords, David and his men returned to their homes only to find them burned to the ground and their families taken captive. The loss was so great and the depression so deep they wept until they had no power or strength left to shed another tear.

In 1 Samuel 30:4 it says, “Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep.”

The men then began the blame game saying that David was responsible for their losses and became so bitter that they literally spoke of putting David to death.

“Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters.” (1 Samuel 30:6a)

But David knew where his strength lay, and that is with God.

“But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God … So, David inquired of the Lord.” (1 Samuel 30:6b, 8a)

And the Lord told David to go and get back what was taken. Obeying God’s instructions David was able to recover everything.

“So David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives. And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all.” (1 Samuel 30:18-19)

Depression resulting from life’s losses can be so overwhelming that we can literally lose all desire to continue. But to overcome these seasons of loss we need to trust God and steel ourselves in Him, being fully assured that He has a plan and purpose though it all.

Therefore, we need to get into God’s word and ask God for His wisdom and guidance to recover what has been lost and bring joy to our mourning and take away this overall spirit of heaviness.
